Material handling is defined as the handling of raw material, semi finished materials and finished goods. It deals with the preparation, placement and positioning of materials with a view to facilitate their storage, preservation and movement. It is a function which facilitates the movement of material in and outside the store house.
Material handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption and disposal.
Basic elements of Materials handling
Like as many others machine handling has 4 basic elements. Details are given below:
- Motion: Material handling is concerned with moving material and finished products from one place to another place. It is called motion of material.
- Time: Material handling should comfirm that no products production procedure or customer need will not hampered by arrive on target place too late or too early.
- Quantity: Material handling assure that each location revives the correct quantity of parts.
- Space: Material handling assure the best utilization of storage or space.
